Fritz Balthaus: bubble-wrap-focus

>Bubble-wrap-projection

The image remains diffuse. No matter how often the slide projector - trapped in its own automatic funktion - zooms, it never succeeds in holding a clear image or in reaching a final goal. By placing the transparent bubble-wrap usually used for transporting art in a slide frame, Fritz Balthaus outsmarted the technical apparatus with a minimum of technical means. In the Projection, a blister-like figure becomes visible that expands and contracts, pulsates and breathes. This work was first exhibited in 1993 in the context of the "Exchange II" exhibition in the shedhalle, Zurich. Equipped with autofocus, the slide projector is condemned to fixate on one point from which it then focuses a selected plane. That is what the program dictates. This process leads to an endless cycle without an exit in which one out-of-focus image replaces the next.
